The lighthouse turn with a club. The “y” made by the arms and club glides smoothly in a horizontal arc as the torso creates effortless momentum.

You should now compare the swing sensations resulting from maintaining a relaxed upper body against those experienced when the upper body becomes stiff and rigid. Try this while swinging the club along a lighthouse-turn arc, keeping the triangle (or “y”) intact. The first swing should be done, as before, with relaxed and limber arms. The fact that we added a club to our horizontal swing arc should not affect the swing sensations; the club is merely an extension of the relaxed, extended left arm. The arms and club will be pulled around by the uncoiling motion. The motion feels fluid and effortless.

Before starting the second swing, tense the entire upper body—arms, hands, shoulders, chest, and back. Creating a lighthouse-turn arc now will be quite a strain. You might also move your swing center and may even lose your balance. A similar swing sensation (one you recognize?) can be experienced by coiling for the lighthouse turn with a relaxed triangle, then, as the uncoiling is about to commence, abruptly stiffening the upper body muscles. The resulting unpleasant sensations probably include a deceleration of the club shaft, disconnection, loss of balance, and unnecessary strain.
